Perhaps you view Soundcloud Go as “another” Apple Music and Spotify alternative. Actually, Soundcloud Go is something completely different. I used it for a while to analyze it and answer the pressing question: what is Soundcloud Go, and is it worth it?

What is it?

Soundcloud Go is a subscription service, available for $4.99 per month, that gives you ad-free listening to the Soundcloud library. It also allows you to download songs to the native Soundcloud app. For $9.99 per month, Soundcloud also offers Soundcloud Go+, which has the same features as Soundcloud Go, plus thirty million “premium” tracks available to listen to. While this may sound like a lot, it’s nowhere near the number of songs available on Apple Music or Spotify.

Let me get one thing out of the way: no, it’s not just “another Spotify rip off.” Soundcloud Go (and Go+) is actually completely different. If you’re looking for an alternative to Spotify and Apple Music, you can stop reading here. If you know anything about Soundcloud, you know it’s a unique community and library of music that you won’t find anywhere else. A lot of artists on Soundcloud tend to be indie artists who don’t release their music on Spotify and iTunes, meaning you won’t find their music anywhere else.

Is it worth it?

Soundcloud Go is absolutely worth it if you love Soundcloud, want to get rid of ads, and want to be able to download stuff for offline listening. It best suits users who use Soundcloud on a daily basis. So what about Soundcloud Go+? For an additional $5 per month, you get access to “premium” tracks, which are basically “conventional” songs that you’d find on Apple Music or Spotify. The problem with this is that the selection is still slim. I was only able to find about half of the artists I listen to via my Google Play Music All Access (through YouTube Red) subscription. I’d say it isn’t worth $5 for what you get, and you’d be better off coughing up $10 for Spotify, Apple Music, or YouTube Red.

In conclusion, if you love Soundcloud and use it daily, give Soundcloud Go a try. For now, I’d steer clear of Soundcloud Go+.
